Foundation Plantings

Shrubs, small trees and perennials planted along the house to soften walls, frame entries and stay the right size for years.

The plants along the foundation connect a house to the ground. Done well, they soften hard walls, frame the front door and add color in every season. Done poorly, they hide windows, trap moisture against the siding and outgrow their spot within a few years. Many Nashville homes have builder-grade shrubs that were planted too close to the walls and now need to be replaced with plants that suit the space.

We plan foundation plantings with the mature size of every plant in mind. We choose evergreen anchors, flowering shrubs and low perennials so there is structure in winter and color in spring and summer. Plants are set at the right distance from the house, in beds with improved soil and fresh mulch, and spaced to fill in without crowding. We remove overgrown shrubs, correct bed shapes and make sure water drains away from the walls, so the planting looks good and protects the house. We also check roof drip lines and downspouts first, because plants beside the house do best when water is directed past them and not dumped onto their roots.

Right size for the space

We choose plants by mature size so they do not smother windows or walls.

Four-season interest

Evergreens give winter structure, while flowers and foliage add spring and summer color.

Healthy planting beds

Soil is loosened and amended, and beds slope slightly away from the foundation.

Replace what has outgrown

Overgrown shrubs are removed and replaced with better-suited plants.

Questions

Foundation Plantings FAQ

How far from the house should shrubs be planted?

It depends on mature width. We space plants so they never touch the siding.

Can you remove my old overgrown shrubs?

Yes. We remove them, including roots, and prepare the bed.

What plants work on the north side of a house?

Shade-tolerant choices such as hydrangeas, hostas and ferns do well there.

Will plants near the foundation cause damage?

Properly spaced plants and good drainage protect the house.

How long before the plants fill in?

Most planting looks established in one to three growing seasons.
