Small spaces need smart design. Here is how layers, containers, vertical elements and compact plants make a small yard feel generous.
A small yard can be as inviting as a large one when it is designed well. The challenge is making every square foot count: space for a place to sit, some greenery, a bit of privacy and low upkeep. Many Nashville townhomes and infill lots have narrow side yards, tiny backyards and a front garden that has to do everything, from welcoming guests to hiding the trash bins.
We design small yards in layers and zones. Compact trees and shrubs give height without crowding, vertical features such as trellises and screens add privacy, and containers and raised beds bring color without taking up lawn. A small paver or stone patio gives a place to sit, and low-maintenance groundcovers replace patches of thin turf. Careful lighting makes the space feel bigger at night. We keep the palette simple, with repeated plants and materials so the yard feels calm and complete.
