Clay holds water, packs hard and starves roots. Here is how to amend it and choose plants that thrive on it.
Much of Middle Tennessee sits on red clay. When wet, it is sticky and holds water around roots. When dry, it bakes hard and cracks. Plants that need good drainage drown in it, and plants that need steady moisture struggle when it dries. Many landscape failures trace back to the same cause: planting into unprepared clay and expecting it to behave like garden soil.
The solution begins with understanding the soil. We test it, loosen compaction and blend in compost and organic matter where plants will grow. In beds with heavy drainage problems, we raise the planting area with amended soil, add drains or choose plants that tolerate wet feet. For lawns, we aerate, topdress and choose grasses that handle clay. We also select plants known to do well in clay, such as coneflower, black-eyed Susan, switchgrass, river birch and redbud.
