Standing water kills plants and floods foundations. Here is how grading, drains, rain gardens and the right plants keep a yard dry.
Wet yards are common across Middle Tennessee, with its slow-draining clay and heavy storms. Water pools in low spots, runs toward the house and keeps grass soggy for days. Mosquitoes breed in puddles, mud tracks into the house and plants rot from standing water. Fixing it starts by understanding where the water comes from and where it should go.
We trace the water from roof downspouts, neighboring lots and slopes and plan the right mix of fixes. French drains and catch basins carry water to a safe outlet, regrading shapes the ground so water moves away and rain gardens and dry creek beds turn runoff into a feature. Where a spot will always be wet, we plant species that enjoy it, such as river birch, iris and switchgrass. The result is a yard you can use after a storm, with a drier foundation and healthier plants.
