Lawn Seeding and Overseeding

Fall and spring seeding that thickens thin lawns and starts new ones, with slit seeding, starter feeding and a watering plan.

Tall fescue lawns thin out over time. Summer heat, drought, foot traffic and disease leave bare spots and weak areas, and fescue does not spread on its own the way bermuda does. The cure is overseeding, which adds new grass plants to the lawn so it becomes thick again. Done in early fall, when Nashville soil is still warm and the air is cooling, overseeding gives seed the best conditions to sprout and establish before winter.

We prepare the lawn by mowing low, removing debris and, when needed, aerating or dethatching so seed meets soil. We use a slit seeder to place seed in the ground, spread a high-quality blend suited to your sun and shade, add starter fertilizer and, for bare areas, topdress with compost or soil. Then we give you a watering plan, because keeping seed damp is the most important step. For new lawns, we do the same careful preparation, with seed or sod depending on your timeline.

Best time is early fall

Warm soil and cooling air help seed sprout and establish before winter.

Slit seeding for contact

Seed placed in the soil sprouts more reliably than seed thrown on top.

Right blend

Seed blends are chosen for sun, shade and traffic.

Watering plan

Light, frequent watering keeps seed damp until it sprouts.
