Native plants are tough, local and loved by pollinators. Here are the ones that do best, and how to use them.
Native plants have adapted to our soil, our weather and our insects over thousands of years. Once established, many need little water or fertilizer and shrug off summer heat. They also feed bees, butterflies and birds in ways that imported plants cannot. Familiar natives include purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, bee balm, milkweed, little bluestem, switchgrass, redbud, serviceberry and oakleaf hydrangea.
Natives look best when they are designed, not scattered. Plant in drifts of three or five, repeat shapes and colors and use clean edges, mulch and a framework of evergreens so the garden looks intentional. Match each plant to its light and moisture. Water well for the first year, and then let the plants teach you how little they need. We design and install native gardens, and we explain the seasonal rhythm of cutting back and letting seedheads feed birds.
