Hardwood, bark, pine straw and dyed mulch all look and last differently. Here is how to pick the right one.
Mulch protects soil, holds moisture, blocks weeds and gives beds a finished look. The choice of material changes how it looks, how long it lasts and how it behaves. Shredded hardwood knits together and stays put on slopes. Pine bark nuggets look bold and last a long time. Pine straw is light, airy and favored under pines and azaleas. Dyed mulches hold a deep black, brown or red color for months, though they may fade in strong sun.
Whatever you choose, depth matters. Two to three inches is ideal. Thinner layers allow weeds to come up and thicker layers can smother roots. Keep mulch a few inches away from trunks and stems. Refresh beds each spring and top up lightly in fall. Avoid piling mulch against the house, where it can attract termites and hold moisture against siding. We help you pick a material, calculate the quantity and install it neatly.
