Perennials come back every year and grow more beautiful. Here is how to choose them, plan bloom times and keep beds easy.
Perennials return each year, growing fuller as they mature. Coneflower, salvia, daylily, sedum, black-eyed Susan, hosta, astilbe and many others handle Middle Tennessee well. The secret to a beautiful bed is planning: choosing plants that bloom in sequence, arranging them by height and repeating colors and shapes. Add ornamental grasses and evergreen shrubs for winter interest and structure.
Soil preparation sets the stage. Loosen clay, add compost and shape the bed so water drains. Plant at the right depth and spacing, water well for the first season and mulch to hold moisture. Deadhead to extend bloom and divide clumps every few years to keep them healthy and to make more plants. We design and plant beds that look good from spring bulbs to fall asters, and we leave you a simple calendar for care.
