Safe, handsome steps and landings in natural stone, block or pavers for slopes, entries and garden paths.
Steps do more than connect two levels. On a sloped Nashville property, they make a yard usable, welcome guests to the front door and prevent slips on wet clay. Poorly built steps can shift, wobble and become a hazard. Good steps have consistent risers and treads, a solid base and drainage that keeps water from freezing or pooling on the surface. They should also look like they belong with the house.
We design steps for comfort and safety, with even rise and run, deep enough treads and landings where the path turns or rises. We build on a compacted base, set stones or blocks with proper overlap and finish with sturdy edges. We can use natural stone slabs, cut stone, concrete pavers or blocks to match the house, and we add rails, lighting or planting at the sides when needed. We explain how to maintain the steps, including cleaning and resetting if shifts occur. We also consider how steps will feel with wet shoes, in the dark and in winter, then choose surfaces and lighting that keep everyday use comfortable and safe. A handrail is sometimes the best finishing touch, and we help you decide where one makes sense. Where a path crosses a slope, we plan drainage so water does not run down the steps.
